The Courage to Change

Clay Gaspar is the president and chief operating officer at WPX Energy. He’s been part of helping oversee a massive business and cultural transformation at the company which involved more than $8 billion of buying and selling oil and gas properties. 

He will walk you through three levels of  ethical decision making that have been instrumental throughout the process, including quick wins, tough calls and what he refers to as the “not-so-instant replay.” He’ll discuss key decisions WPX faced at all three stages and what the company learned in the process. Says Clay: “Every level gets progressively more difficult. The hardest of all is to revisit something you’ve previously decided and reverse course. It takes courage, honesty and admitting you could have done something differently.”

About the Presenter:

Clay Gaspar is a proven leader in oil and gas. He has more than two decades of experience and is widely respected by peers and the investment community for his technical acumen. He's the President and Chief Operating Officer of WPX Energy (NYSE:WPX) where he oversees the company's capital budget for drilling and development. He excels at change management and has helped lead WPX through a number of transformational events, including the company's entry into the world-class Permian Basin. Prior to WPS, he worked at some of the industry's largest companies, including Newfield Exploration and Anadarko Petroleum. Clay is a registered professional engineer and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He has a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering and a master's degree in petroleum and geosciences engineering.
